Introduction

A multi-phase production for future studies. The main goals are:

  • Replace the MCStepPoint samples generated for the CD3 review with equivalent samples using updated geometry
  • Provide calibration and analysis samples in 'digi' format
  • Integrate CRV, Calorimeter and Tracker data
  • Provide official samples of signal (mu->e- and mu->e+) and the principal 'faux signal' processes including DIO, cosmic spallation, RMC, RPC
  • Provide 'Mock Data' samples of undifferentiated combinations of signal and faux signal processes, formatted as a high-level skim

MDC2018 samples are intended to facilitate algorithm development, not to support updated precision values of sensitivity or background rates. As such, some approximations are made in the generation compatible with results being accurate at the 90% level.

MDC2018 production started with the CD3 proton-on-target (stage1) output. As such, updates to the production target geometry were not included.

Many updates have been made to the geometry since CD3, including:

  • 21.5mm diameter hole in the stopping target to reduce radiation load on the tracker and STM
  • 18 evenly-spaced Tracker stations with brass shielding interleaved
  • Updated calorimeter crystal sizes and positions
  • More realistic description of supports, cabling, electronics, etc.
  • Realistic magnetic field map inside the cryostat (Mau13)

Digi Datasets

These datasets are in 'digi' format : representations of the detector digital output, with corresponding Monte Carlo truth information. Reconstruction and analysis can be run directly on digi files without additional simulation or randomness.

The differences in MDC2018b compared to MDC2018a is:

  • fix to simulation of panel timing distribution jitter (affects all samples, the importance is under study)
  • add CRV output to primaries (affects only primaries)

The difference in MDC2018c compared to MDC2018b is:

  • fix fcl so that the ProtonBunchIntensity products is in the output (only effected mixed datasets)

The difference in MDC2018d compared to MDC2018c is:

  • fix parentage bug in compression in mixed events (only). Does not effect primary-only. This fix is in v7_1_2.

Primary Particles with background

NB: MDC2018b datasets are missing the ProtonBunchIntensity objects, which records the MC truth of the background rate of the event. MDC2018a, b, and c datasets have a flaw where some of the StepPointMCs are mis-matched to the wrong SimParticles. This is fixed in MDC2018d. As replacement datasets are made we will remove the flawed datasets from this list (they will still be on the detailed list).

CRV flash

The first step is two jobs. The output of cd3 stage 1 was:

  • sim particles from PS to the outside of the CRV (dsregion)
  • sim particles from PS to TS2 (mubeam)

The "PS-CRV" job takes the dsregion sample and propagates it through the CRV. V7_0_0 release.

DS

The DS job takes the output of cd3 stage2 (particles traced down the beamline to TS5), and simulates them through the rest of the detector. The CRV StepPoints are written out. The stopped muons in the target and everywhere else are written out to "TGTstops" and "OOTstops". The remainder is written to the "beam" files (which is not used further, the flash is produced in the DS-flash job). Release was v7_0_0.

The stopped muons are produced by running over the art files and writing out ntuples, to be used as input into other jobs. THese are the ntuples:

Target and Out-Of-Target (OOT) stopped muon products

These jobs take the ntuple of the muons stopped in the target and other locations in the DS (separately) and use them to produce various secondary particles. The release was v7_0_1. Output is StepPoints in the CRV and Trk/Cal separately. Target stop muon decay/capture is modeled using our own physics process algorithms, specific to Al. OOT muon stops are processed by G4, which uses cruder models of the physics but correctly accounts for the heterogenous materials.

DS flash

In this job the cd3 stage 2 output (particles at TS5) are propagated through the detector and StepPoints are written out. This job runs over the input sample 20 times to produce a higher-statistics sample of flash in the detector than can be generated in the previous (DS) job. Run in v7_0_2.
