Introduction

A multi-phase production for future studies. The main goals are:

  • Replace the MCStepPoint samples generated for the CD3 review with equivalent samples using updated geometry
  • Provide calibration and analysis samples in 'digi' format
  • Integrate CRV, Calorimeter and Tracker data
  • Provide official samples of signal (mu->e- and mu->e+) and the principal 'faux signal' processes including DIO, cosmic spallation, RMC, RPC
  • Provide 'Mock Data' samples of undifferentiated combinations of signal and faux signal processes, formatted as a high-level skim

MDC2018 samples are intended to facilitate algorithm development, not to support updated precision values of sensitivity or background rates. As such, some approximations are made in the generation compatible with results being accurate at the 90% level.

MDC2018 production started with the CD3 proton-on-target (stage1) output. As such, updates to the production target geometry were not included.

Many updates have been made to the geometry since CD3, including:

  • 21.5mm diameter hole in the stopping target to reduce radiation load on the tracker and STM
  • 18 evenly-spaced Tracker stations with brass shielding interleaved
  • Updated calorimeter crystal sizes and positions
  • More realistic description of supports, cabling, electronics, etc.
  • Realistic magnetic field map inside the cryostat (Mau13)

Erratum

The differences in MDC2018b compared to MDC2018a is:

  • fix to simulation of panel timing distribution jitter (affects all samples, the importance is under study)
  • add CRV output to primaries (affects only primaries)

The difference in MDC2018c compared to MDC2018b is:

  • fix fcl so that the ProtonBunchIntensity products is in the output (only effected mixed datasets)

The difference in MDC2018d compared to MDC2018c is:

  • fix parentage bug in compression in mixed events (only). Does not effect primary-only. This fix is in v7_1_2.

The difference in MDC2018e compared to MDC2018d is:

  • Improved filling of the end momentum in SimParticle. This is in v7_1_5.

The difference in MDC2018f compared to MDC2018e is:

  • CRV photon simulation uses more efficient 'folded' tables. Expected changes are <1%. Switched to v7_2_2

The difference in MDC2018g compared to MDC2018f is:

  • Minor bug in CaloShowerStep compression fixed. No impact on the user as a patch module automatically fixes this when reading older data. Switched to v7_3_1

The difference in MDC2018h compared to MDC2018g is:

  • MCTrajectory for primary particle now saved. CosmicTimeMap now generated for all primaries. Switched to v7_4_0

The difference in MDC2018i compared to MDC2018h is:

  • A bug in the compression of mixing when applied to pre-digitized and pre-compressed data was fixed.
  • A bug in the calculation of the radiation length traversed by a particle going through a straw as reported in TrkStrawHitSeed was fixed.
  • MDC2018a-h
    • The digi (dig) and reco (mcs) output contains multiple copies of some tracker StepPointMCs. Workflows that loop over these directly, such as producing mixed digi collections from primary digi collections, will produce erroneous results. Navigating to tracker StepPointMCs from StrawDigiMCs will produce correct results.
    • The radiation length reported by the TrkStraw objects held by the KalSeed objects in the reco dataset is incorrect. This value was computed for information purposes only, it was not used in the track fit so this bug does not otherwise affect the output.

Ensemble Datasets

Fake data ensembles were assembled to mimic what a real dataset from the experiment would look like in order to allow tests of analyses. Details about the production of these ensembles and locations of the datasets can be found here.


Reco Datasets

These datasets are in 'reco' format : output of the major reconstruction algorithms, with corresponding Monte Carlo Truth information. Reco format files occupy less than 1% of the disk space per event as digi files, and can be processed more than 1000 times as fast, depending on the job. Analysis can be run directly on reco datasets. Only mixed digi samples (Primary Particles with backgrounds) are processed through reconstruction, and only events with at least 1 successful Kalman filter fit track (upstream or downstream, electron or muon fit, p>60 MeV/c) are saved.

Digi Datasets

These datasets are in 'digi' format : representations of the detector digital output, with corresponding Monte Carlo truth information. Reconstruction and analysis can be run directly on digi files without additional simulation or randomness.


Primary Particles

Single particle generation, no mixing, with minimal filtering, write out digis and MC products. DS-cosmic were produced using the Daya-Bay generator with DS volume as target, 20K events generated per file, with a generated rate = 5494.24 Hz. Calo-cosmic were also produced using the Daya-Bay generator with the calorimeter disks as target, 20K events generated per file, with a generated rate = 1884.6 Hz.

Primary Particles with background

Single particle generation, with mixing, with minimal filtering, write out digis and MC products. Earlier production versions (MDC2018a-c) had problems and should not be used. The DS-cosmic-mix sample was created by adding background mixing on top of the pure primary events described above.

CRV flash

The first step is two jobs. The output of cd3 stage 1 was:

  • sim particles from PS to the outside of the CRV (dsregion)
  • sim particles from PS to TS2 (mubeam)

The "PS-CRV" job takes the dsregion sample and propagates it through the CRV. V7_0_0 release.

DS

The DS job takes the output of cd3 stage2 (particles traced down the beamline to TS5), and simulates them through the rest of the detector. The CRV StepPoints are written out. The stopped muons in the target and everywhere else are written out to "TGTstops" and "OOTstops". The remainder is written to the "beam" files (which is not used further, the flash is produced in the DS-flash job). Release was v7_0_0.

The stopped muons are produced by running over the art files and writing out ntuples, to be used as input into other jobs. THese are the ntuples:

Target and Out-Of-Target (OOT) stopped muon products

These jobs take the ntuple of the muons stopped in the target and other locations in the DS (separately) and use them to produce various secondary particles. The release was v7_0_1. Output is StepPoints in the CRV and Trk/Cal separately. Target stop muon decay/capture is modeled using our own physics process algorithms, specific to Al. OOT muon stops are processed by G4, which uses cruder models of the physics but correctly accounts for the heterogenous materials.

DS flash

In this job the cd3 stage 2 output (particles at TS5) are propagated through the detector and StepPoints are written out. This job runs over the input sample 20 times to produce a higher-statistics sample of flash in the detector than can be generated in the previous (DS) job. Run in v7_0_2.

These were created by William Song and Dave Brown in a private job. The cd3 stage 1 is propagated to the DS and pion stops are written out to an ntuple, uploaded by hand. The fcl used should have been committed.
